A patch is a different repair from replacing the brick. Ask the mason which bricks they propose to patch and which to replace, and why.
Should I seal the wall after replacing bricks?
Ask first. A National Research Council digest (CBD-30) explains how a vapour-permeable but water-repellent coating can lead salts to deposit behind the surface and spall the skin.
