Where a house has exterior walls of natural stone, this service covers repair of those walls above ground: loose or missing stones reset, open joints repointed and damaged sections rebuilt. Foundation cracks and basement waterproofing are a separate trade.
Ontario's Building Code says stone shall be "sound and durable". Its mortar table calls for type S in exterior loadbearing walls above ground and N or S in non-loadbearing walls. Under the Building Code Act, "construct" includes repair, and the City lists "structural repairs or alterations" as building permit projects. If a wall is bulging, cracked through or being rebuilt, ask the City whether a permit is needed.
For historic stone the heritage plans matter. The Wilbrod/Laurier plan says repointing historic masonry "is complex and must be undertaken by an experienced mason", that new mortar must match the original, and that repairing stone features with the same materials needs no heritage permit. Elsewhere, check your district's plan or designation by-law.
Ask how the stones will be taken down and reset, which mortar is proposed, how dust is controlled (Ontario classes dry mortar removal with a power cutting device as Type 2 silica work) and what scaffolding is needed. Where a worker could fall more than 3 m, Ontario's fall-protection rules apply.
