What the scaffolding line depends on: how much of the wall needs access and how high it goes, how long the scaffold stays up, and what is around the base of the wall (landscaping, a tight lot line).

A few things worth checking when you compare quotes: ask whether scaffolding is broken out as a separate line or folded into the per-square-foot repointing rate, because bundled quotes are harder to compare. Ask how many days the scaffold is expected to be on site, since a job that runs longer than planned can affect the rental cost. Also ask what protection goes around the base of the scaffold to keep debris off the ground.

The written quote should show the area of wall being repointed, the height and the access method, the mortar type and colour match, and what happens to the debris.

The most useful question to put to the mason before you agree to anything: ask them to walk you around the wall and explain exactly which faces need scaffold and which can be done from a ladder, so you understand what you are paying for.
